Teaser Tuesday: Hallowed by Cynthia Hand

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by MizB over at Should Be Reading!
To participate all you have to do is:

•Grab your current read
•Open to a random page
•Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
•BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Okay, so my Teaser Tuesday for today is from the upcoming Hallowed (An Unearthly Novel) by Cythinia Hand, one of them is kinda on the naughty side, but it was just too funny not to share!!!  I'll probably be using this line with my son someday!  Don't shake your head at me, you will all do it too!!!  But, I wanted to share another one too for those who want something a little cleaner.  The 2nd is a teaser for all the Edward Norton and Brad Pitt fans out there!!!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

"When I was a kid my mom used to tell me that if I had sex before I was married, my... junk would turn black and fall off." (ARC, p72)

"First rule of Angel Club, you do not talk about Angel Club."
"     "Second rule of Angel Club," chimes in Jeffrey.  "Do not talk about Angel Club." (ARC, 25)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I love both of these teasers so much!!!  Cynthia Hand has such a great sense of humor!  Plus, I am loving every moment of this book!  Go ahead and add it to your TBR, and if you haven't read the 1st in this series, Unearthly, then run do not walk and read it right now!!!!  Hallowed will be released January 17, 2012.

YA Crush Tourney: Tucker vs Michael (Match #12) goes to Michael!

And the winner is.... MICHAEL!

Yesterday, because of the sheer volume of votes, we once again crashed a polling site. The only way to maintain fairness was to just redo this match completely. Because of now crashing 3 different poll sites, we have decided for the sake of our sanity and all of your guys sleep, to only allow 1 vote per computer plus only keep the polls open for 24 HOURS. This seems to be the only way to do this without taking the risk of having more rematches. Voting will open at 8am and close 24 hours later at 10am on Saturday morning. So call in all of your reinforcements for the next matches.

Before we get started, it's the same rules as usual. We've tried as much as possible to keep everything spoiler free, but to really show the best qualities of a character sometimes spoilers are necessary, so BEWARE!!! Also, feel free to write comments in the comments section about either character, but we will not tolerate rudeness. The moment it crosses over from logical argument to rudeness, your comment will be deleted and your vote cancelled. With all that said, let the voting begin!

Tucker Avery (Seed 21)

Tucker is being defended by Amy D. the wonderfully, gorgeous, unearthy (like that) Tucker is from the amazing book by Cynthia Hand, Unearthy. You can can check out Baby Sister Brittany's review of the book here.

Personality:
Hold onto your hearts girls. Cynthia Hand's Unearthly gave life to the boy I thought I would marry (shhhh...don't tell my husband). Tucker Avery will get to know you down to your "real" hair color with his playful, teasing personality. He gets along with everyone and is self-assured enough to go stag-ish to prom (granted he comes home with the girls he wants). He wrote the book on charming from the way he tilts his hat to the way he says "ma'am." He is a family man. He loves and protects his sister and his family's land.

Looks:
Tucker will melt you from the inside out with his hazy blue eyes. If you can still manage to see after a kiss from him, you'll enjoy looking at his tall, tan, muscled body or even run your hands through his short golden brown hair (score one for brunettes). Your legs will buckle with the sight of his slightly stubbled jaw and dimple on his left cheek. He is a man that loves to smile and laugh...yum.

Talents:
Tucker is a man's man, but he softens while sharing these things with the girl he loves. He can pull you out of a ditch, backcountry skis, white water rafting, fly fishing, hiking, tour guide, swimming, and on the rodeo team. Honorable mention to dancing, whistling and being a cowboy poet. Every date with Tucker is about being and being together. No distractions. A kiss from Tucker can make a girl find glory.

Special Attributes:
Tucker is the hardest working boy in YA. He holds multiple jobs in order to help out his family and achieve his goals. He is popular not because he has money. He has a gift at putting people at ease. Tucker knows where the best huckleberries are and can think like a fish. Tucker is forthright and honest--can't stand lies. He is man enough to take three girls from the rodeo team to prom. Not only is he a knight in shining armor (on multiple occasions), but he is the best birthday present ever. Whether you are watching the sunrise or fishing, you know you have Tucker's undivided attention. You know you just want to lean into that chest.

Anything else you'd like to add?
He picks wildflowers for his love, making out under the stars is a favorite past time, makes you "forget to eat, float around in a daze, and bounce out of bed in the morning." He reads comic books, loves cheetos, and longs for a time when there were no fences.

He will love you for who you are--all of you.

Michael (Seed 5)

The smoldering Michael is from Myra McEntire's debut novel Hourglass. You can find out more about her and Hourglass by clicking her name on our side bar. Plus you can check out our Teaser Tuesday of Hourglass here. Michael is being rep'd by our own magnificent, honorary sister, Bethany.

Personality:
Are you a literate lady looking for the most delicious fictional crush since Mr. Darcy? Well, look no further, girls… Michael Weaver has arrived!

If you’d like a southern gentleman with an edge, Michael is the man for you. Chivalry, honor and charm
aren’t dead, and Michael’s got them—in spades. He’ll hold open doors and win over your family. He puts his friends and family first, and won’t make promises he can’t keep. He even tips well!

What’s more, he is THE most selfless guy in this entire tournament. If not dying on your dates is important to you, Michael is the way to go. Unlike so many of the other guys in this competition, he won’t even think about killing you! Always a plus. Not only that, but he can—and has—died for love. You’re in safe, strong, big hands with him!

But most importantly, Michael is genuinely loving. He makes the girl he loves feel like the most special person in the world and will, literally, go to any lengths to protect her.

Looks:

It’s probably a good thing that Michael is fictional, because if anyone this gorgeous were real, he’d have an army of stalkers on his hands. Throughout the book, he’s described as, “a prince too gorgeous to be walking around with peasants,” a dark angel, and an old-Hollywood, Cary Grant type.

Plus, he’s BUILT. And, if that doesn’t get you, what about the wickedly arched dark eyebrows, the olive skin, the defined cheekbones? The smell of citrus and clean laundry. The mellow, husky voice. And the mouth. The full, disarming mouth with a smile like “buttered biscuits and honey.”

Talents:

Want a man who is fluent in Italian? He’s got you covered. He can drive a stick. He can understand complex physics.

Oh yeah, and he can time travel. There’s that.

Special Attributes:

Now here’s where it gets interesting, ladies. He generates the most insane chemistry with Emerson that they blow out light bulbs. Literally. He can give a full-body buzz simply by holding hands. Let us imagine the possibilities of that for a second….

Finally, to top it all off: He READS! You know you love a literate man, and Michael’s got a bookshelf full of Byron, Vonnegut, Orson Scott Card and Kerouac. If you think reading is sexy, vote for Michael.

What makes Michael better than Tucker?
It's not that there's anything wrong with Tucker, but he just doesn't have the WOW factor that Michael does.

For instance, the two are like their cars: Tucker is a rusty blue truck, Michael is a sleek black convertible.

Tucker stalls in relationships. There's no initial attraction, and it takes months for him to establish any kind of relationship. With Michael, on the other hand, there is instant heat that takes off immediately. Zero to Sixty in eight seconds or less.

Anything else you'd like to add?

I’ll just leave you with this passage:

He pulled me closer, trailing his mouth along the line of my jaw and down my neck. I held on to his jacket more tightly, pulling him even closer.

“I’m ready to get out of here,” he murmured in my ear. “Get you someplace I can kiss you properly.”

“This isn’t properly?” I was shaking again. What was it about this boy that made me shake? “If not, can I handle properly?”

“I’ll do my best to make sure you can.” He kissed his way across my cheekbone to my lips, his hands sliding under my jacket, his fingers burning against the cotton of my T-shirt. I couldn’t help thinking about how his hands would feel on my bare skin. “Or that you can’t handle it. Whatever you want.”

YA Crush Tourney: Edward vs Tucker (Match #5) Goes to Tucker

And the winner is:

Tucker Avery

To begin the same way as before:

There might be some spoiler in the following posts. We've tried to keep it as general as possible, but overall this tourney will not be spoiler free, so BEWARE!!!

First off, you are free to write your own comments about either character in the comments section, but we will not toleraterudeness. The minute it crosses over between logical argument to character bashing, your comments will be deleted and you vote canceled! You may vote as many times as you like. Voting will be open for 40 hours starting Monday, July 11 at 8AM and conclude Tuesday at midnight.

Edward Cullen (Seed 12)

Edward Cullen is represented by one the honorary sisters on our very own YA-Sisterhood. She is also on twitter, so please go follow her @BADhickey. Edward is the sexy, mind-reading vamp from Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series if you really didn't already know that. You can find out more info about the Twilight series here.

Edward, Edward, Edward….(((BIG SIGH)))…oh! Edward! What can I say?!?!? I am so excited to advocate for Edward Cullen in the Twilight series, because to me, no one can come close to my Edward! But, please VOTE VOTE VOTE to show the love.

Personality:

Edward is very passionate. He loves deep and he loves hard. Once he is loyal to someone, he is loyal to the death. As a “vegetarian” vampire, he is dedicated; he is good and moral and worried about not hurting anyone. He has values and sticks by them at all costs. Edward is playful with his “siblings” and has a teasing sense of humor. You can completely trust Edward with anything; he does not reveal others secrets and therefore is highly trusted in his family. As a best friend and lover, he is a good listener who is also intelligent and articulate. But, most importantly, he is completely committed to Bella. Edward is virtuous and spiritual. Although he feared his soul was unable to be saved, he was not willing to risk anyone else’s soul; even if at risk to losing the most precious thing to him. Edward protects those he loves and will never let emotional or physical harm come tothem. All in all, he is PERFECT!!!!

Looks:

HOT HOT HOT!!!! Sexy!!! Gorgeous!!! Dazzling!!! “Inhumanly Beautiful”!!! Edward has pale skin. He has a lean but muscular build. Edward looks deep into your soul with his amber eyes Reddish-brown/bronze-colored hair is memorizing to anyone who looks at him. Basically his face and features are described as completely perfect. And, he sparkles in the sun!!! How cool is that!?!?!
Just look at this hottie:

Talents:

As a vampire, Edward has many special talents. He is extremely strong, very fast, and unbreakable. He can read people’s mind (except Bella’s) so he knows whatever everyone is thinking, but he does not take advantage of that unless some one he loves is in mortal danger. Other vampire talents are his enhanced sense of smell and vision. Since he does not sleep, he is an avid reader (!!!!) which makes him ridiculously smart. He is a lover of music and he plays the piano!!!! Not only, does he play, but he composes too! (SWOON) I would contend, another one of his talents is his kissing skills, but that will be discussed in the next section.

Special Attributes:

His number one special attribute is his make-out skills! Seriously, people, the boy literally takes the breath right out of Bella and makes her forget everything! This does not just happen once, but every time they kiss. Wow! On to other things besides kissing, Edward is extremely graceful in his movements which make him seem like a dream come true. He is an old world gentleman and is concern about the state of Bella’s soul and virginity. Girls, the boy wants to marry her!!! He doesn’t just want to milk, he wants the whole cow!!! His family is a double bonus. The Cullen family as a whole is just wicked awesome; they are all welcoming, accepting, and will risk any and everything for her. Both he and his family have hot cars that they drive super fast. Not only is he superrich, but his most important quality is that he is desperately and completely committed to the one he loves. Talk about the total package!

What makes your guy better than his competitor?

Edward is immortal whereas Tucker is mortal. Edward is deeply and passionately in love with Bella and will be for all eternity!

Anything else you'd like to add?

Two words:
Robert Pattinson

Vote for Edward….he’s the whole package!!!!

Tucker Avery (Seed 21)

Tucker is being defended by Amy D. The wonderfully, gorgeous, unearthly (like that) Tucker is from the amazing book by Cynthia Hand, Unearthly. You can check out Baby Sister Brittany's review of the book here.

What makes your guy better than his competitor?

Tucker will never make you cold. His only instinct is to protect and never to harm anyone especially those he loves. With Tucker you will never be an outcast, but will accepted no matter what who you are. No paranormalness...he is 100% the real deal.

Anything else you'd like to add?

He picks wildflowers for his love, making out under the stars is a favorite past time, makes you "forget to eat, float around in a daze, and bounce out of bed in the morning." He reads comic books, loves cheetos, and longs for a time when there were no fences.

Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees . . . .
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.
Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.
As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?
Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

Unearthly
by Cynthia Hand
Reviewed by: Baby Sister Brittany
The Sisters say: Unbelievable. Unpredictable. Unearthly. J

I have this tendency to get annoyed with trends really fast. I’ll read a couple fairy books, then be loathe to read anymore. I read two angel books, and that was quite enough for me. But then a book comes along like Unearthly that makes me wonder if I’ve been missing out on some amazing books in my haste to ignore trends. It’s certainly not a book I would have ever picked up on my own, but I kept seeing recommendation after recommendation for it on Twitter. And can I say how thankful I am? Because I loved Unearthly!

It was long, which if you’re anything like me, is a major plus. I read so frequently and so quickly that I’m often left feeling like a book ended too soon. But Unearthly is very filling!

The Angel folklore definitely had a unique twist! Cynthia Hand definitely didn’t rely on the same old same old information. She created a world of Angelbloods that was uniquely her own, and I personally loved getting to be a part of it.

Jackson Hole made for a wonderful setting. I never thought I’d have a desire to vacation in Wyoming, but you can bet I’ve changed my mind!

I also really loved that this book didn’t follow the normal paranormal formula. For one…. Clara already knows she’s an angel. So you don’t have to suffer through pages and pages of waiting for her to wake up already. As I read the book (and loved it), I had this recurring fear that it was going to fall into that same predictable pattern, but thankfully, IT NEVER DID! YESSSSSSSS!!!!!

And now… to my favorite thing about Unearthly. THE BOYS. Oh, the boys. Christian is your classic YA boy. Clara’s been having visions of him, and she’s pretty sure that her Angel purpose is to save him. And Tucker… well, Tucker is her best friend’s brother. And he’s kind of a pain in the butt. But a charming pain in the butt. And I won’t give anything away… but once again, Cynthia Hand goes against the grain and doesn’t let the romance fall into predictable patterns.

And there aren’t just twists when it comes to the oh-so-predictable YA formula. There are also plot twists galore.

I loved this book. LOOOOOOVED IT. And you will too.

So read it.

(And yes, in case you were wondering, that’s an order).
