Unbreak My Heart Blog Tour

1.) Did you have to research to find the songs in Unbreak My Heart, or did they just come to you as you were writing?

Some came from a mix I had tucked away, others just came to me as I was writing. I usually have a soundtrack in my head, so that was fun.

2.) What is your favorite song in the book?

Ooh, I like most of the songs I mention. But actually I didn't know "Clementine" by Elliott Smith--that one I had to research. So it was fun to discover, and I really like it.

3.) If Clem were to play the song game with James, what would be the perfect song for to come on to describe her feelings for him?

Maybe "London Rain" by Heather Nova. 

4.) You traveled the Great Loop with your parents, were there any specific scenes or characters that were inspired by that trip?

I used to stargaze with my dad, and we'd talk about things that are deeper than what you talk about in the daylight, so that scene was definitely taken from real life.

5.) How did you come up with the names Clementine and Olive?

I walk through Brooklyn's Greenwood Cemetery a lot (it's lovely!) and I often write down names that I like. Both of those came right from the graveyard. Weird, I know, but I like it.

Samantha is not the only one struck with an insatiable hunger!  Read Dark Kiss by Michelle Rowen, and I am sure you will find yourself hungering for more!  Dark Kiss is delectable—so tasty, I devoured it in one sitting! 

Yes, this is another book in the angel/demon category, but, even with the aspects that resembled other books, I still really enjoyed it.  The only thing that bothered me is the very déjà vu feeling I got because much of the plot line resembled the old WB drama, Charmed.  (I mean there’s a Source (of evil) and the Hollow (which sucks good and evil inside it)—both of which are very similar to the television show).

I know quite a few people are burned out on the whole angels and demon scenes; so, I’m going to try to convince you WHY you should read this book.

1.) You don’t have to spend half the book watching the main characters try to figure out who and what they truly are—that’s the biggest thing that bugs me with some paranormal books.  It’s so obvious to us as the reader that at times you just want to rear back and slug someone while screaming, “Seriously?   They have wings….must be an angel or demon!”  It’s not like this with Dark Kiss…right from the start, Samantha figures out who Bishop (we’ll call him Cutie #1) is and who Kraven is (we’ll call him Cutie #2).

2.) There is plenty of action!  There wasn’t any down time where the characters were moping in self-pity because “woe is me….the world is ending and I don’t know what to do.”  Instead, the characters are straight forward with what needs to be done, and they don’t sit around—they get straight to work.  There was never a dull moment!

3.) The hottie guys!  Bishop, angel, has been sent to, quite literally, save the world.  However, when he falls from Heaven into our world, something goes wrong and he ends up a little disjointed.  Enter Samantha who’s touch can open Bishop’s mind and make him sane again.  Not only that, but they have an intense pull towards each other.  This pull is what creates the romance in the book.  Now, I do wish there was more romance because I’m a sucker for it, but I’m hoping that we will see more of that in the second book.

4.) Then we have Kraven, demon, who has also been sent to save the world.  He’s dark, sarcastic, and all to willing to kill whatever gets in his way.  Let’s say Bishop’s the light that Sam is drawn to, but who can resist Kraven, the dark?  I really enjoyed him, and I have a feeling we are going to see quite a bit more from him in the second book.  Can we predict love triangle? 

5.) The ending is satisfying.  While there is plenty still up in the air and much to still be resolved in future books, the ending does not leave you screaming and pulling your hair out.  I don’t know about you, but I really don’t enjoy cliffhanger endings.  It frustrates me that I have to wait a year in some cases to find out if someone lives or dies.  I like when things are wrapped up (somewhat), so I can have some closure but still look forward to the next book.

So…don’t be put off by the fact that it’s another angel book.  It’s refreshing in its own way, and the guys are swoon-worthy.  I think you’ll find Dark Kiss to be a tasty read, so get sucked into Michelle’s world—you never know what you’ll find!

I read the entire Need series in the last week, and I have to say, each book gets better and better, culminating in an action-packed race to Ragnarok (aka Armageddon, aka Apocalypse, aka AH! End of the world and no more paranormal romance books)!!  If you have not read this series and want something with a different species of paranormal—try the Need books by Carrie Jones.  They focus on pixies (no, not Thumbelina or Tinkerbell)—evil, blue, shark teethed pixies.  These creatures will keep you guessing—are they good or bad?   Is it possible to be both?

 For me, it was nice to see a different species in the paranormal genre mixed in with something I love even more—mythology!  These books have a focus on Norse mythology which doesn’t show up much in the young adult genre; in fact, I can’t think of another book I’ve read that focuses on Norse mythology.  So, it was new and exciting, seeing Carrie’s world intertwine with the gods Thor, Odin, and Hel.  Carrie creates a fantastic world, rich in imagery.  I felt like I could close my eyes, walk through a looking glass, and then I would right there with Zara, Nick, and Astley (mostly Astley…even the pixie thing doesn’t turn me off!)!

I really enjoyed Zara in this book.  She’s struggling with the idea of being the Pixie Queen, and it’s really endearing seeing inside her head—trying to see her reconcile her past with her present and constantly contemplating the future.  She’s not infallible, and that makes her struggle all the more real.  I do wish she would have come into her powers a little bit more—throughout books 1 through 3, we are constantly hearing about how Zara is half-pixie, and as a result, she would be extremely powerful once turned.  Although Zara did get to kick some butt, we really didn’t see her come into her own and learn to embrace her powers.  The book was short, too, (less than 300 pages), so I believe there was plenty of room to add a bit more so we can see Zara grow.

Then we have the guys…Nick and Astley.  No matter what team you are on, I do think you will enjoy this book, and you won’t regret who she finally chooses.  Nick is his same old, were self—agitated, grumpy, and kick butt.  But, we see a different side of Nick in this book.  We also see his downfall—his struggle to accept Zara as a pixie.  I thought his reaction was completely believable—I mean, it’s nice to see a love story where everything is not all, “Oh, I’ll love you forever, no matter if you turn crazy murderer or not.”  Nick is afraid of what Zara has become, and I found the strained relationship between him and Zara to be realistic and oddly satisfying.  Will they both get over their prejudices and end up together?  I won’t tell, you’ll have to read for yourself!

And then there’s Astley.  I love Astley.  Like Zara, he struggles with who he is, but it isn’t a struggle that causes him to crumble.  Instead, this struggle causes him to constantly surprise me.  Zara and Astley grow closer in this book, and I loved seeing the pixie relationship progress.  I do really wish there was more to the romance, though.  There was no scene where I blushed because I wanted to re-read it over and over again.  There was no time where I would have given my pinky finger to trade places with Zara.  I wanted passion and fear and uncertainty and love all mixed into one (or two or three or four) dramatic romantic scenes, but they never came.   Even so, I enjoyed being surprised over and over again by Astley.  Will she choose him?  I won’t tell!

There never seemed to be a dull moment in Endure.  It was action-packed from the start, and whenever it seemed like all was about to settle down, some mythological creature threatening apocalypse would show up and tear down the illusion.  You definitely won’t be bored with this one!  There were times where I did skip over some of the description, though because I felt bogged down by it and wanted to get straight to the action.

Overall, I’m definitely glad I didn’t skip over this series.  They were all very quick and fascinating reads, and although there wasn’t as much romance as I would like, I still did enjoy what we got to see between Zara and Nick and Zara and Astley.  Alas (I’m speaking Astley talk), love triangles do not both me!

So, if you want to see a different kind of mythology and a different kind of species to pluck you out of your paranormal funk, this is the series to read!

Ahhh! Jennifer Echols! We love Jennifer Echols! Typically-- we sisters prefer the unrealistic side of YA fiction (Paranormal, Fantasy, Dystopian), but we've read a few contemporary books that we've really enjoyed, and one of those was GOING TOO FAR by Jennifer Echols. I think this latest work sounds awesome. Who doesn't think pilots are hot?

Sweet baby aliens, this book is everything that all of you are hoping!  There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe the amazingness of this series!  Plus, how about that teaser!  There couldn't be a better one for a Teaser Tuesday!  We will post our review the week before it's release, but honestly, don't worry about reading any reviews, go ahead and just go pre-order Onyx because it will blow you away!!!

The Sister’s Say:  A heartfelt story about hope and healing.

Sophomore year broke Clementine Williams’ heart. She fell for her best friend’s boyfriend and long story short: he’s excused, but Clem is vilified and she heads into summer with zero social life. Enter her parents’ plan to spend the summer on their sailboat. Normally the idea of being stuck on a tiny boat with her parents and little sister would make Clem break out in hives, but floating away sounds pretty good right now. Then she meets James at one of their first stops along the river. He and his dad are sailing for the summer and he’s just the distraction Clem needs. Can he break down Clem’s walls and heal her broken heart? Told in alternating chapters that chronicle the year that broke Clem’s heart and the summer that healed it, Unbreak My Heart is a wonderful dual love story that fans of Sarah Dessen, Deb Caletti, and Susane Colasanti will flock to. 

I haven’t read too many contemporary novels because usually I start one and a few chapters in I want to stop because they are too depressing or too whiney, so when I started Unbreak My Heart, I was sure I was going to want to stop reading it at some point.  I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself smiling at Melissa’s love story, giggling at her ridiculous word play (why knot?), and fuming at the reactions of some of Melissa’s not-so-likeable characters.  Great stories take you through the gamut of emotions, and Melissa’s did just that.

Clementine has fallen in love with her best friend’s boyfriend, and as a result she has become a social outcast.  Then, to make matters worse, her family is dragging her off for a summer of sailing.  Clem thinks the summer is going to be a “summer of exile” but she just might find that exile is not so bad—especially once she meets James.  I really like James—he’s sweet, thoughtful, artsy, and he’s struggling with his own kind of exile.  He’s not my favorite type of young adult boys (I have a thing for the dark and broody), but he is exactly what you would picture when you think of a sweet guy sailing away the summer with his dad.  Although I prefer for my ya guys to be strong, arrogant, and deeply sexy; James really did bring a smile to my face.  He was perfect for this story, and it was fun reading how he rebuilts Clem’s heart. 

My favorite character in this story was Crazy Olive, Clem’s ten-year old little sister.  She’s so vibrant and full of life, and on more than one occasion, puts forth a philosophical statement that sums up how tragic and temporary teenage life and drama can be at times.  She’s the perfect foil to Clem’s depressed personality. 

I really loved the setting for Clem’s road to recovery.  Most of the book takes place on the boat and out on the river, and I love the scenes where Clem and/or James just sit out over the water or on the beach and just relax.  It made me wish I had my own boat that I could use to escape reality.  I could hear the waves, feel the breeze, and smell the freshness.  Clem thinks she’s away from the real world, and I love to see her character grow as she discovers that even on the river, away from her friends and her life, that things can be just as real.

I do wish there would have been more romance, and the book does end abruptly.  I thought Melissa could have spent a little more time giving us some more information, after all the book was really short, only 240 pages.

Final Judgment:  Melissa Walker creates a heartwarming story that chronicles the ups and downs of teenage friendship and love.  Torment meets healing in this tale of discovery and romance.

I did not go to my senior prom. I wanted to, desperately, but no one asked me. I had boyfriends in high school, but usually they were younger (juniors when I was a senior) and also not the “prom-going’ type. It's not like one of them would have asked me to my senior prom. I guess I could have asked them, but for some reason that felt wrong to me. I wanted to be asked. During high school I was a girl who acted like she didn't want to go to her prom, to football games, to pep-rallies, but really I did. I just didn't feel welcome at any of those places. I just didn't feel like the other people who were at those places really cared whether I was there or not; so it was easier to HATE all that. Much easier to pretend that I didn't want to belong.

Freshman year I tried my hardest to fit in with these "prom-going" people. These girls who seemed like they had no problems, looked perfect, acted perfect, smelled perfect. I joined the pep-squad. I helped decorate homecoming floats. I joined student council. I was even on the field hockey team (yes I wore a plaid skirt), but I kept feeling like I was just a body. Just a warm pile of skin and bones taking up space around all these people who actually belonged there. No one made me feel like I belonged there. No one made me want to belong there, but I still felt like I should want it. I still tried very hard to be wanted. I still cried in my room at night about why I wasn't wanted.

After months and months of being ignored, of being made to feel like it didn't matter if I existed, the only thing I felt like I could do was HATE. So instead of trying to be friends with them, I hated all of the popular girls. I hated everything they liked. I hated myself. It was easier than getting hurt, over and over and over again. It was better than admitting that I would never fit in with them.

Soon, I found other people who hated and we became friends. We made fun of everything the popular kids did. We hated things together. We hated ourselves together. We smoked and drank and did drugs together because that's what people who hated themselves did. That's what people who hated everything did.
I could ignore wanting to be like everyone else easily because I had other people next to me to make me forget that I had. But that all changed at prom season.

I wanted to wear a pretty dress. I wanted a boy to ask me. I wanted to ride in a limo, but I didn't dare admit any of this because the people who hated would have made fun of me. Would have ostracized me. Would have HATED me.

Since high school I have come to terms with the choices I made. The choices that felt like my only choices at the time. Writing PRETTY AMY helped me deal with these choices and what I missed out on because of them. I hope readers on both sides of the popularity coin will gain a better understanding of each other by reading it. I hope it will help girls like I was understand that other people feel what they feel too and that there are healthier ways to deal with those feelings. But, even though I have come to terms with it, it doesn't mean I wouldn’t have thrown all that away for a chance to be Prom Queen.

It doesn't mean that Amy wouldn't have.

It actually started out pretty slow with most of it focusing on character development--I even got discouraged at one point because I felt like nothing was happening. But I am SO GLAD I kept going--it really starts to pick up near the middle, adn from that point, I just had to know what was going to happen. It actually started out pretty slow with most of it focusing on character development--I even got discouraged at one point because I felt like nothing was happening. But I am SO GLAD I kept going--it really starts to pick up near the middle, and from that point, I just had to know what was going to happen. Amy Plum did an excellent job of providing twists and turns--I mean, there were parts I never would have seen coming! Any time I tried to predict what the bad guys were up to, I was proven wrong. And even more interesting, Amy Plum doesn't even reveal who the antagonist is until the very end--another surprise I didn't see coming! Why should you read this book? 1.) If you loved Vincent in the first book, you will truly love him in Until I Die. He is even more sexy, more mysterious, and more protective.  I just love how hard he tries to keep Kate happy—even if it hurts him. 2.) You will learn even more about the Revenants--secrets they hide and prophecies they believe.  You get bits and pieces of their history as the story unfolds. 3.) You will get to know the characters even better. I really think my favorite part of Amy Plum's Revenant series is the deepness of her characters. She knows how to write so that you feel like you know her characters--even the ones that aren't focused on like Gaspard, Jean-Baptiste, and some of the other revenants. I loved getting to know Ambrose and Jules more in this one--full of loyalty, trust, and charisma. 4.) And finally--the cliffhanger ending. I had to reread the last page a few times to see if I missed anything because I quite literally wanted to fall to my knees and scream, "You can't end there!" 2013 can't come soon enough! 5.) The new characters!  There are a few new characters that play a large role in this book, and I really enjoyed seeing how other Revenants act, speak, fight, etc.  We are used to the Paris revenants, but in this book we get to see some from other parts of the world. I do wish there would have been more romance between Kate and Vincent.  Don’t get me wrong, the romance is there, but it felt a little lacking, like it didn’t progress much from book 1.  I wanted more of those secret moments where he touches her cheek and her stomach rolls; more of those kisses that just take your breath away; more of those oh la la moments that make you wish you were Kate!  Hopefully, Amy Plum will go all out in the next installment (If I Should Die). So finally, I urge you to push through the slower parts in the beginning because it is definitely worth it to see how the rest of the story unfolds!!!!!!

Hi Tristan, first off I want to say thank you for the interview and that I really enjoyed your story. I can't wait for book 2! There's not many books out there from a guy's POV. How do feel about having all your thoughts right out there for everyone to read?

Did you ever decide what you wanted to be called, Merman, Merbro, Merdude, Merstud etc?

As long as you call me, it's all good. (told you ladies, snarky!)


But seriously, there's nothing wrong with merman. I'm proud to be one. damn Zoo Lander. (I must admit, Ben Stiller yelling MERMAN, did go through my mind several times while reading this book)

Something like a genie. Oh! Or, remember that guy we met on Toliss Island? Marty McKay... Whatever he is, it's pretty cool. You know what I mean. *wink* (oh yes, Marty, I liked him!!!)


I know some Merfolk have powers, if you did or could have magic, what kind would you want?

Tough one. I'll go with mind-reader. Girls seem to think guys are mind readers, and we're NOT. Not even a tiny bit. This'll make my life a whole lot better.


Can you tell us your favorite thing about Layla?

Don't tell her. She smells nice. Like lavender and honey and sun screen.


What is your most embarrassing moment?

Lady...you know I'm a merman, right?


And lastly, other than Layla, are there any other fictional girls you would "crush" on or fall for?

Faith, the Vampire Slayer. Maybe I like girls that'll kick my ass?
