Match #28: Tessa (Seed #3) vs Izzy (Seed #6) goes to TESSA!

And the winner is...

Tessa!

Welcome to The YA Sisterhood and round 3 of The Tournament of Heroines, The Extraordinary Eight! Can you guys believe we're already down to eight heroines? Crazy! Thank you in advance for your participation in our Tournament of Heroines! We hope you make some friends (and not too many enemies), discover some fantastic books, and have a lot of fun!

Some general rules before we begin:

There may be some spoilers in the following post. We've tried to keep it fairly general, but overall, this Tourney will not be spoiler-free. So beware.

Secondly, You are welcome to write your own comments about either character in the comments section, but we will not tolerate rudeness. The minute it crosses over from logical argument into character bashing, your comments will be deleted and your vote canceled.  POLLS WILL BE OPEN FOR 24 HOURS AND WILL CLOSE AT 12:01AM EST ON DECEMBER 31st.

And now for the match....

Hey y'all! My name is Avery I review primarily YA paranormal books at my blog Avery's Book Nook. I have been a long time stalker follower of YA Sisterhood and their tournaments so it should come as no surprise that I am super excited to be advocating Tessa from Cassie Clare's Infernal Devices series! You can follow me during the tournament at:

 About Her:

Tessa
Gray, a sixteen year old American is sent to live with her brother in
England after her guardian, her Aunt Harriet, passes away (both of
Tessa's parents passed away when she was three years old). Upon arriving
in England she learns that things are not what they seem- her life
especially.

Her world is turned upside down when she is
kidnapped and discovers that she has the ability to shapeshift. Upon
being rescued from her kidnappers she befriends the London Institute's
Shadowhunters including, but not limited to, Will, Jem, Charlotte, and
Henry, alongside the Institute's staff including Thomas, Agatha, and
Sophie.

Alongside the British Shadowhunter's Tessa
attempts to thwart the Magister, a man hellbent on destroying the
Shadowhunters through the use of clockwork creatures.

Best Attributes:

Tessa is by far one of the most genuine and modest female YA characters in my opinion, especially when it comes to her looks:

"Nate,
with his fair good looks, was the one in the family generally agreed to
have inherited her moth's beauty, but Tessa had always been perfectly
content with her own smooth brown hair, and steady gray eyes. Jane Eyre
had had brown hair, and plenty of other heroines besides. And it wasn't
so bad being tall, either..."
(Clockwork Angel, pg. 17)

She
is inquisitive and open-minded. She loves to read just as much, if not
not, than all of us and she can often be found quoting all of her
favourite books:

"He didn't know what books meant to her, that books were symbols of truth and meaning..." (Clockwork Angel, pg. 97).
She is by far one of Cassie's most unique and mysterious characters
(In "Clockwork Angel" we are told that she appears to be a warlock,
however her true identity- or a better approximation of her identity- is
revealed in "Clockwork Prince").

She can outsnark even the snarkiest of characters, Will Herondale included:

"Perhaps she's a girl who's fallen madly in love with me and persists in following me wherever I go."

"My talent is shape-shifting, Will, not acting" (Clockwork Prince, pg. 87).
Speaking of Will Herondale, she has two of the most swoon-worthy YA
male characters vying for her attention (and she never lets that
knowledge go to her head).

She takes everything in
stride. Her clockwork angel pendant is one of the most kick-butt pieces
of jewelry in the world of YA books (see "Clockwork Prince").

Let's pretend that the Dirty Sexy Balcony Scene is an attribute ;)

What Makes Tessa a True Heroine?

 She
is genuine and always remains true to her character. She is kind and
has a big heart. She's still able to love those who aren't always worthy
of being loved.

She
is selfless beyond belief- she is willing to do the right thing even if
it means hurting herself in the process. For instance, in the case of
her brother:
"Nate
was not like other people... He had a beautiful innocence about him
that had to be protected at all costs. And Tessa had tried. She and her
aunt had hidden Nate's own weaknesses from him, the consequences of his
own flaws and failings. Never telling him of the work Aunt Harriet had
had to do to make up the money he had lost gambling, of the taunts Tessa
had endured from other children, calling her brother a drunk, a
wastrel. They had hidden these things from him from being hurt"
(pg. 352).
She
is eager to learn about the new world that she is thrown into. She
doesn't jump into things without any thought- she isn't careless, nor is
she afraid to ask for help.

Why should YOU Vote for Tessa instead of Izzy?

While their is no denying that Izzy is kick-butt and that she could most certainly take Tessa down in a fight, I do believe that Tessa is more of a heroine than Izzy for a number of reasons:

Unlike Izzy who looks down upon people (especially Mundanes and Downworlders), Tessa doesn't look down upon anyone (ie. Sophie occupying a lower
social status than herself, Jem being ill)- she gives everyone the
benefit of the doubt without doing so in a naive way.

Tessa doesn't pout when things don't go the way that she wants to, furthermore, she is willing to do what needs to be done without complaint, unlike Izzy who has a habit of locking herself in her room, throwing temper tantrums, and throwing things at people when things don't go her way.

Tessa is not dependent upon the males in her life (nor is she careless). She doesn't play on the
boy's feelings for her- manipulating them to do what she wants, whereas Izzy has been known a time to two to manipulate the males in her life, Simon especially, to do what she wants (which usually has disastrous consequences).

1. About Her
Isabelle "Izzy" Lightwood is a 16 year-old Shadowhunter. She is stunningly beautiful, which works to her advantage - afterall who thinks the pretty ones are dangerous? Her weapon of choice is a whip, but she also uses daggers (and her charms). While she's out defending the world and keeping peace among the downworlders. She is a lover of fashion and is often seen fighting in boots with heels. She is a bit boy-crazy, but has her sights set on one lucky Simon. She's a bit insecure though, after seeing her brothers get hurt so often.
"Nothing less than seven inches. That's my motto." - Isabelle Lightwood (City of Ashes)

2. Best Attributes
For starters, she's written by Cassandra Clare! How can you not love her characters?
Izzy can kick ass and do it in style.
She has spunk and a fun, snarky sense of humor.
She has a bit of a tough exterior, but also a soft side for those she loves her family and would do anything for them that she only lets those close to her see.
“Isabelle," she said, lightening her tone with an obvious effort, "your loyalty to your friend is understandable --"
"He's not my friend." Isabelle looked over at Jace, who was staring at her in a sort of daze. "He's my brother.” ― Cassandra Clare, City of Ashes: Deleted Scene

3. What makes your girl a true heroine?
Izzy is a great heroine, she shows teens that even the "pretty" girls have doubts and personalities beyond the stereotype. She is fierce in every aspect. She is loyal to those she loves. Like I've already hinted at, sometimes she may at times be a bit harsh, she always does what is best for her loved ones. When harm comes to them and she is unable to do anything, she is guilt-ridden. Yet she perseveres and is stronger for it.

4. Why should we vote for Izzy instead of Tessa?
Honestly, I am not going to be like "IZZY IS BETTER", because uhm...it's Tessa! Attitude wise they are two completely different characters, but Clare has a knack for writing incredibly strong female characters.

Because of that either way that this match goes, I will feel incredibly good about losing (or defeating) one of my co-Team Cassie characters/advocates.

I will say that, personally, of the two characters I prefer Izzy! She has more spunk and a personality that is a bit more like my own...or at least the type of person I'd prefer to be.

Match #24: Karou (Seed #22) vs Izzy (Seed #6) goes to Izzy!

And the winner is...

IZZY!

Welcome to The YA Sisterhood and round 2 of The Tournament of Heroines, The Superior Sixteen!

POLLS WILL BE OPEN FOR 24 HOURS AND WILL CLOSE AT 12:01AM EST ON DECEMBER 27th.

And now for the match....

Hey y’all! I’m Enna Isilee from Squeaky Books and Karou and I are ready to ROCK the Heroine Tourney! From the moment I finished Daughter of Smoke and Bone I knew it was going to be one of my favorite books OF ALL TIME and I’m so excited to be supporting Karou. Check out my blog and twitter to get all the latest Karou updates!

About her

Karou has blue hair (and it grows out of her head that way) and lives in an apartment in Prague. Not Prague Nebraska or Oklahoma, Prague the gorgeous capital of the Czech Republic. She’s an art student by trade and likes to spend time with her best friend Zuzana, but takes a lot of time searching for teeth for Brimstone. Oh, did I fail to mention that she was raised by CHIMERAS?! These demons are far from evil, though. Sure Issa’s snakes can kill you, but only if you try to steal from the shop. And Brimstone’s rams horns may look scary, but he’s relatively harmless… relatively. Karou trades the teeth she finds for wishes.  The scars on her stomach were probably made by bullets.

An artist, teeth smuggler, and protective best friend, Karou is no pushover.

Best Attributes

Karou is kick-butt. She knows her way around quite a few weapons (curved ancient knives being her specialty) and even when she doesn’t have one, she can stop a sword-wielding angel with a plank of wood (or the energy-blasting eyes tattooed on her palms). When she needs help, Karou has a necklace of wishes and all she has to do is rub it and wish for any [small] thing and it will come true. But if she needs a bigger wish she's got to do a favor or two for Brimstone. She speaks a ton of languages (not all of them human). But above all that, Karou is a true friend. She can see past any beautiful or ugly exterior and those she loves she loves forever. She’d do anything for her chimaera family, even if she has to (and often does) go out on a limb. And even with her wild personal life, she’s always there for her friends.

What makes Karou a true heroine?

Karou never wavers. She is strong and true. With the training of a warrior, she isn’t above violence, but she doesn’t revel in it. She will literally go to the ends of the earth to protect her family and friends. She’s incredibly brave. When she thought she was being hunted she didn’t cower in the shadows. She became power, not prey.

Like all the best heroines, Karou isn’t perfect. And she recognizes this. She’s made plenty of mistakes in her life, and her curiosity sometimes gets the better of her. What makes her a true heroine is that she embraces her mistakes and learns from them. She's also passionate and strong enough to know when she’s right even if the rest of the world tells her she’s wrong.

Another great thing about Karou, is even when she's falling in love she's not some damsel in distress. Her love-interest is as swoony as they come, but Karou keeps her head and doesn't become obsessed. The needs of her family and friends always come first.

In the Chimaera language, Karou literally means "hope," and she is a symbol of hope to everyone around her. If I ever needed a heroine to help me fight monsters, finish a giant marionette, or just someone to talk to, I wouldn’t hesitate to choose Karou.

Why should you vote for Karou instead of Izzy?

If I'm being totally honest (which I try to be as much as possible) if there were two people more evenly matched it'd be Karou and Izzy. They both have intense fighting skills, both are extremely loyal to their families, they both have magic-runes, and they're both amazing heroines all around.

If Karou has one advantage on Izzy, it'd be her attitude. Sometimes Izzy's first-opinions of people get in the way of her doing her job. Yes, she usually gets the job done, but that initial hesitation can cause some trouble. Karou doesn't hesitate. She's not irrational, but Karou's willing to look past appearances to what needs to be does and she does it.

Honestly, I wish Karou and Izzy could be a team, they'd kick BUTT! But if I had to choose just one to get things done, it'd be Karou. Because I know there's no risk of her insulting me or making me feel weak for needing help.

Additional Info

In case you didn't see this before, I'd just like to add that Karou’s author, Laini Taylor, is pretty much as amazing as Karou herself. And not just because she has hot-pink hair (though it unfortunately doesn’t grow out of her head that way) or because she runs a super-awesome blog. Laini is one of the most literary and wonderful authors I've ever had a chance to read. You should to check her out. And read all her other books (which feature fairies, goblins, curses, demons, and more).

Calla is great, but Izzy has this entire family who would to anything for her. Calla's situation isn't quite so...pleasant. Izzy's job as a shadowhunter IS to keep werewolves (and other creatures) out of trouble, so she can definitely take her on!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Hi, my name’s Becky B. and my blog is Bibliognome.

I’m the advocate for the ferociously fierce Calla Tor from the book Nightshade by Andrea Cremer.

You can find me rooting for Calla at my blog and on Twitter @GeckyBoz.

You can support Calla with buttons found
here.  You can see my love for Nightshade by seeing my review of Nightshade here , my review of Wolfsbane here, and my favorite quotes/lines here.

Things you can do:

Tweet, Facebook, yell from the roof tops (pretty much anything you can do to promote the tournament and Calla would be appreciated.)

If you tweet use the #HEROINETOURNEY or #TeamCalla hashtags

Here’s who to follow on Twitter so you know what's going on and when:
              Me
- @GeckyBoz

              The YA Sisterhood - @YASisterhood

              Andrea Cremer - @andreacremer

All About Calla Tor:
"...the white wolf who'd been eyeing him was no longer an animal, but a girl with the wolf's golden eyes and platinum blond hair." (pg. 5, Nightshade)
Calla can change from a white wolf into a girl and back again at will.  Calla
has platinum blond hair and golden eyes (but if you have any dumb blond
jokes I wouldn’t recommend using them around her because she could
literally rip your face off).

In Calla’s world there are witches (Keepers), Guardians (wolves), wraiths,
succubus, incubi and even a smidgen of zombies.   The history of this
world is complex because the history that's known has as the saying
goes, been written by the winners.  This means that Calla has to figure
out who she can trust.

In a refreshing sort of way the two love interests are both actually
likable and she has many reasons for choosing either one.  This allows a
lot of great tension to happen and lets the reader enjoy an actual
believable love triangle where you don't know right away who she will
choose.

Calla is a strong character who finds that most of what she knows about her
world is wrong and yet she continues to go forward and look for the
truth.

She tries even when terrified:

"My twisting gut didn't feel badass at all; it felt like pudding." (Calla pg. 409)

She makes hard decisions every day:
"As an alpha I could help my packmates get the things they wanted, but there wasn't anyone who could do the same for me." - (Calla pg. 137)

Best Attributes:

I decided to list Calla’s best attributes via a Name Poem:

C – Courageous

A – Assured

L – Loyal

L – Lethal

A – Astute

A True Heroine:

Calla shows that she’s a true heroine in the very first pages of Nightshade when she faces down a rampaging bear to save the life of a stranger.  She does this even though she knows that in doing this that there could be horrible consequences for her.  This fearlessness is one of Calla's great strengths as a character and shows that she tries to do what is right no matter what the cost.

Why you should vote for Calla instead of Izzy
- She can transform into a freaking wolf (I don't know about you but I think that that is extremely cool.)
- Sure they can both fight but I would bet that Calla would win on pure
awesomeness alone especially since she’s not a normal type of werewolf
(Being a Guardian means she can shift into a wolf whenever she wants).

Anything else you’d like to add:

This is a supernatural story that has a lot of heart and some great
unexpected twists and turns.  It's  about choosing your destiny and
figuring out which path is best.  Overall it's just a fantastic world
full of characters that you can truly care about.

Please support Team Calla and vote, vote, vote :)

* Also be sure to check out Bibliognome today and see what prizes I'm offering for supporting Calla and what I'll giveaway if she wins this round.
