Blog Tour: Breakable by Aimee L. Salter- Five Favorite Quotes

Today the YA Sisterhood is excited to host a stop on the blog tour for Aimee L. Salter's Breakable. This was one of those books that gripped hold of my heart, and stayed with me until long after I'd put it down. As a former high school teacher, I thought this book was so authentic and realistic. The voice was excellent, the plot in turns was unpredictable and heart-breaking.

I recommend it for fans of John Green, Jandy Nelson, and Lauren Oliver. All in all, I can only say that this is one of my favorite books I've EVER read. The best compliment I can give it to say is that this book is going on my Harry Potter shelf.

Here's the book blurb:

If you can’t trust yourself, who can you trust?

When seventeen-year-old Stacy looks in the mirror she can see and talk to her future self. “Older Me” has been Stacy's secret support through the ongoing battle with their neurotic mother, relentless bullying at school, and dealing with her hopeless love for her best friend, Mark.
Then Stacy discovers Older Me is a liar.
Still reeling from that betrayal, Stacy is targeted again by her most persistent tormentor. Only this time, he's used her own artwork to humiliate her - and threaten her last chance with Mark.
She’s reached breaking point.
Literally.

"Original. Authentic. Heart-breaking. BREAKABLE has officially become one of my favorites!" -New York Times Bestselling Author of Losing It, Cora Carmack

What a cool cover, too! It fits so perfectly with the book, which is predominantly about art and self-image.

The author was kind enough to stop by today, and give us a sneak peek at the book with look at her favorite quotes! This book was one of those where I could have easily highlight a favorite line on every page, so I was super excited to get to see Aimee's favorite.

Here they are!

Five Favorite BREAKABLE Quotes
As a novelist, every book is a story from the heart. There’s a connection with every word you write. But when Brittany asked me to offer up my favorite quotes from Breakable, I couldn’t pass up the chance.
See, even though I love the whole story, there are definitely moments – moments that make me laugh, or make me feel – where I have to stop and savor when I’m reading back through the manuscript.
I hope you’ll read the book and enjoy these moments as much as I do!
FAVORITE QUOTE #5: Stacy’s mother is, unfortunately, one of the people in Stacy’s life who contribute to her eroding sense of self-worth. I love this moment, because in it, Stacy shows her dry-side as an internal self-defense:
I met Older Me’s gaze, trying not to be obvious about my questions, while Mom prattled on about how to walk into a room like you owned it. Strange, I’d always thought she was born walking around as if her farts were gold-plated. I hadn’t realized she’d cultivated the talent.

FAVORITE QUOTE #4: Stacy is an artist, struggling for inspiration for a major competition. There’s a moment when she considers painting the people who make life hardest for her. I always enjoyed that passage because it felt like she took her pain and turned it into something productive:
I flipped back to the image of Finn and imagined turning the idea into a painting – using a spatula for hard lines to depict the sharpness of his features, heavy thick paint for his rhinoceros skin, fat brush strokes for his eyebrows, like caterpillars over his eyes, his long mouth a venomous slash of red and purple.
For Karyn I’d use glossy pastels – waxy crayons that shone on the paper. They’d do justice to her hair. I could layer red and white and beige and cream to make her cheeks blush. Then, when everything was done, use a tool to scrape her eyes out of the heavy wax so they cut through the viewer like they did through me. Her dimples would be hard to get right. I’d need to cut them into the acrylic, like her eyes. Holes in a poisonous blanket.
As her face came to life in my mind, I sniggered and pulled out the crayons to give it a shot. My hand moved quickly, inspired. A snapshot of possibilities sprang up on the paper in minutes – a shiny, waxy, plastic face that hid the darkness beneath.
I’d run a candle flame along the edge of her paper so it burned unevenly. The sooty remains would leave a dark stain on anyone who touched it.
My imagination ran away with me…
FAVORITE QUOTE #3: In this scene, Stacy’s adult self (called “Older Me”) offers her some insight. I don’t usually go in for “moral of the story” stuff, but this was a lesson I learned that it seemed like Stacy needed to learn too. And Older Me was just the person to teach it to her…
Older Me kept talking. “You think the way these people treat you is the end of the world. But I can tell you, it isn’t what happens to you in your life that destroys you. It’s what you do about it.”
“Are you trying to say it’s my fault everyone–?”
“No. I’m saying that you’ve had crap thrown at you. You can either clean yourself up and keep going and prove everyone wrong -- show them you didn’t deserve to get it in the first place. Or you can roll around in it and think you deserve it, and start acting like you do.”
Oh. “Is that what you did?”
She nodded. “Crappy things happened to me and I gave up. And believe me, when you give up, the crap just piles on thicker until pretty soon you don’t even realize it’s crap anymore.” She inched closer to me, her eyes piercing mine. “Stacy, if I had the chance to go back and live it again – to be in your shoes – I’d do it in a heartbeat. Because you’re going to walk away from this and figure out it wasn’t your fault.
“One day you’ll look back and realize that everyone you grew up with didn’t get it right. They didn’t actually know you. They didn’t really hear you. They were just so messed up, they threw all their own crap on you.
“But the thing is, if you can understand that it’s their problem, you’ll brush it all off and walk away clean. While they’ll still be looking for someone to dump on. You’ll win. It’ll be worth it.”
I couldn’t look away from her. “I don’t know…” Her words seemed so right. But I didn’t want to believe them because it meant I had to fight. And I was so tired of fighting.
FAVORITE QUOTE #2: There’s one line that always make me giggle. Something Stacy thinks to herself during her session with the Psychiatrist:
Doc raises his hands. “We’ll move on in a moment. But let me ask you one more question: If you walked out of here today and someone you admired – say, someone like Mark – were to ask you to get involved in a secret relationship now. Would you do it?”
Totally. But I say, “No.”  I’d have hair implants and call myself a cat if it meant Mark would stroke me one more time.
FAVORITE QUOTE #1: My very favorite quote in the book, though it covers an incredibly painful moment in the story, is Stacy’s analysis of her physical ordeal. I can’t tell you how she got to this point, or what happens afterwards, without ruining the story. But for me (and for Stacy) this moment always stands alone, crystallized:
There’s a special kind of pain reserved for dancing with shattered glass. It comes in stages:
The initial assault is fear; you see the glass coming and you know it’s going to hurt.
Then there’s the moment everything explodes and the glass tears at your skin, catching, peeling, shaving you away and you think, I might die.
Then the pieces fall and break into new pieces. You’re heading to the floor too, but they beat you there and all the tattered parts of you land on all the splintered parts of it. They are needles in open wounds. Knives on raw flesh.
And then the fire arrives – hot, burning flames that lick the wounds. And every time you move, the tiny pieces that stuck with you cut a little deeper and the flames roar higher.
In short, it sucks.
If only it ended there.
So there you have it! Thanks for taking a peek inside Breakable. If you decide to read the whole book, I’d love to hear from you at www.aimeelsalter.com or on Twitter (@AimeeLSalter) with your favorite quote!

This is one book that you guys don't want to miss! Everyone that I've pushed this book on has come back calling it one of their favorites. So pick up your copy (Available now from Amazon and Barnes and Noble), and prepare for THE FEELS.

Defiance by C.J. Redwine

Defiance by C.J. Redwine
ARC received from Balzer & Bray (Harper) at ALA
Release Date:  8-28-2012

The Sisters Say:  Dangerous, Daunting, and Delicious!

Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city's brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses and obey their male Protectors, Rachel knows how to survive in the wilderness and deftly wield a sword. When her father, Jared, fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector, her father's apprentice, Logan--the same boy Rachel declared her love for two years ago, and the same one who handed her heart right back to her. Left with nothing but a fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her.

At nineteen, Logan McEntire is many things. Orphan. Outcast. Inventor. As apprentice to the city's top courier, Logan is focused on learning his trade so he can escape the tyranny of Baalboden. But his plan never included being responsible for his mentor's impulsive daughter. Logan is determined to protect her, but when his escape plan goes wrong and Rachel pays the price, he realizes he has more at stake than disappointing Jared.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

I had been eyeing the cover of Defiance for months, and when I got a chance to read it I might (emphasis on the might) have jumped up and done a happy dance while singing, “I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it!”  Then for a moment I got distracted by Saved By the Bell memories, but soon I was right back to dancing for joy about it!!  It already had so much buzz around it, and I knew it was going to be one of this year’s biggest books.

From Chapter 1, I was completely drawn into C.J.’s world—I mean, it was a world with ancient roots yet filled with powerful technology.  It was like a world out of the 1800s was snatched up, thrown through a wormhole and ended up in an alternate future reality where danger from evil tyrants, wandering highwaymen, and immortal beasts is the norm.  C.J.’s writing is rich with imagery and as you read, you are lifted from your world and thrust into her’s—be careful or you might never want to return!

I loved how dynamic her characters were.  It is very rare that I have an extreme emotional reaction while reading a book.  I run the everyday gamut of emotions—happiness, sadness, jealousy, etc, but it is truly a feat for me to embrace such strong emotions and let them take over just from a book.  But, C.J. did it with the Commander.  His evil is rivaled only by Voldemort or Sebastian in my opinion.  As I witnessed his despotic actions, I could feel my hands closing into fists and I quite literally wished I could jump into the book just to punch him in the face (with brass knuckles).  Every move he makes is methodical and calculated; every word he says is dipped in cruelty; and every feeling he shows is laced with manipulation.

Rachel, her heroine, is feisty and tough.  I will admit, she is a typical bad-a heroine who is forced to grow up too fast.  While she is unique in her own way, she does resemble other many other heroines we see in ya literature.  That didn’t really bother me, though, because while she started out like many other heroines, she ended up in a completely different place.  Many of today’s heroines go through something brutal and then hide away into themselves—Rachel fought back with every fiber of her being, and I enjoyed watching her character struggle and rise against.

I really loved Logan.  He’s strong and convicted, and tries not to let anyone get in his way.  I love the way he stands up to the Commander even when he’s in a losing situation.  It makes him all the more admirable and I found myself rooting for him to just grab the Commander and shove his face into the ground!  He is the perfect mix of anger, love, strength and weakness; and I can’t wait to see what is in store for him in the next books.  Plus, he’s a hottie—which always makes a book better!  I’m slightly jealous of his attraction to Rachel—and I can’t wait for more scenes to make me even more jealous!

The only thing that bugged me about the book was the length of the wilderness scenes.  At times I felt like they just went on too long after we had already got the point that they were alone, scared, and hurt.  While some of those scenes were too long, I wish the ending climax would have been longer.

A Warning about Content:  I would rate this Mature-YA because of the violence in the book.  It is very descriptive with murder and death, and there were times when I was bothered by how grotesqueness of some of the scenes.  Besides the violence, everything else would be fine for any teenager.

With all that said, I really enjoyed reading this book.  C.J. creates a world where violence is the foundation and people cower in fear of a murderous tyrant.  The fear that this world instills is real and palpable, and she really opened her imagination up to me.  She creates a world full of black and white, light and dark, where evil is easily seen, yet fear and tolerance keeps it in power.  I love that her heros are just the opposite, not white or black, but riddled with shades of grey.  I loved C.J.’s world, and I can’t wait to push through the wilderness with her again in the future.

The Selection by Kiera Cass

The Selection
by Kiera Cass
Reviewed by: Baby Sister Brittany
The Sisters say: Sweet, Simple, Satisfying

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

The Selection was a fast, entertaining, romantic read that I devoured in one afternoon. It’s a fairytale meets The Bachelor meets Dystopian future. America Singer is a commoner thrust into the world of royalty by a competition to win the heart of the prince. Ironically enough, America doesn’t want to win. She’s in love with someone else back home. But the more time she spends with the prince, the closer they become.

This story didn’t have a great deal of depth. It had some angst, but not much. It was light and fluffy, and the perfect palate cleanser after much of the dark, brooding, tortuous, angst-fest books I’ve been reading as of late. The simplicity of the story drew me in from the start, and I was completely hooked.

I know some people found it to be too simple or too easy, but for me—it was just right. Probably not everyone’s cup of tea—but sometimes a girl just needs a fast, fun, fairytale romance!

It would have been nice to see more of the world-building. The caste system was interesting, but not a huge focus of the book. I have faith that we’ll see the darker side of this dystopian in future books.

My only real complaint for this book was the ending. It wasn’t a bad ending, per say, but felt a bit premature. This felt like the kind of book that could have been made a stand-alone novel, with perhaps a companion novel taking place after the competition. This might be a bit of a spoiler, but I wish I had been prepared for it. We don’t get to see the end of the competition in this first book. *wah-wah*

That’s the only thing that would keep me from re-reading this book everytime I needed a sweet, satisfying romance to pep me up. It felt like the ending was missing, since I didn’t get to know how the competition turned out.

My recommendation for this book is definitely for you to read it! BUT… it might be better to wait until closer to the release date for book 2, so that the ending isn’t as much of an issue.

Brittany's Top 11
I've read so many fantastic books this year that it was difficult to pick my favorites. In the end, I went with those books that made me want to lock myself in my office and write for days until I had a story that was THAT good. In short, I went with the books that inspired me. And here they are...

1. Divergent by Veronica Roth: I love everything about this book. EVERYTHING. Even rereading it, I get so swept up in the story that I have to read it in one sitting.

2. Half-blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout: This is one of those books that as soon as I finished it, I flipped back to the beginning and started over because I couldn't bear the idea of having to wait any amount of time for the story to continue.

3. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor: I'm a complete jerk because I still haven't written a review for this book, even though it's my THIRD favorite of the year. I promise, it's coming! The language, characters, and locations of this book are to die for! Seriously.

4. Chime by Franny Billingsley: Again, Me = Jerk who hasn't actually reviewed this book! I read this book right before I left for my MFA program, and when I got back homework took over my life. But this book.... THIS BOOK was amazing. The language and imagery was so vivid that I felt like I could see, smell, hear, taste, and touch everything Franny described.

5. Shatter Me by Taherah Mafi: This book is unique and poetic and action-packed! And the romance... *faints*

6. Hourglass by Myra McEntire: We @ the YA Sisterhood LOVE Myra. And Hourglass. And Emerson. And Michael. And Kaleb. And everything about this book. :)

7. Delirium by Lauren Oliver: It's hard for me to put into words how much I love this book-- from the characters to the concept to the propaganda between the chapters-- this book BLEW ME AWAY! (Also... guys... Pandemonium is AMAZING).

8. Unearthly by Cynthia Hand: Angels, Missions, Mountains, Swimming Holes, Hot country boys-- *sigh* I could read this book again and again and again!

9. Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare: Cassie really outdid herself with this one! It might be my favorite book of hers yet! Maybe! Argh! I don't know, I love everything Cassie does!

10. Blood Red Road by Moira Young: I absolutely adored this book. It starts a little slow, but then BANG! I couldn't put it down! It's got action, romance, mystery-- you'll love it!

11. Legend by Marie Lu: This book was fascinating and emotional and just plain exciting! I rarely like split narratives, but man did I love June and Day both!

Summary:
Choose: A quick death…Or slow poison…

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She'll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.

And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly's Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can't control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren't so clear…

Thanks to the girls at Two Chicks on Books for recommending this to me.

BECAUSE I LOVED IT.

Yelena’s story captured me from the very first moment. The author’s language is so vivid and sensory-based that I could really feel the environment in the dungeons. I could feel the grime on her skin, the smell that clung to her, the weakness in her muscles. There wasn't a moment that I wasn’t rooting for her to survive. Even though you know she did something to earn her a death sentence, you don’t care. I felt for her so intensely that I wanted her to survive.

And when she takes the chance to be a food taster, risking death by poison rather than the noose, the story completely swept me away.

Yelena is both a meek and strong character, which makes her immediately likeable. There’s just enough introspection to allow you to connect to her and to her past, without getting bogged down in her inner monologue. The action continued to pull me along (and I do mean pull, I couldn’t put this book down!!!)

There is a gorgeous romance at the heart of this book, but it’s budding is slow and realistic. Despite the slow pace, I never once wanted the book to hurry up. I trusted Snyder’s story telling completely, and was willing to go with her wherever she took me. I knew it would be worth the wait (and it was)!

This book is a fantasy set in another world, but it’s a land that is easy to connect to, easy to follow, and easy to understand. It’s a great fantasy for people who don’t normally like high fantasy.

There were so many secondary characters that I loved, as well. People just seem naturally drawn in by Yelena, and they become like the family she never had. Some of my favorite moments were when Yelena decides to learn self-defense from a few soldiers. She’s determined, and the soldiers are hilarious.

I could go on and on about this book, but the truth is that I pretty much loved all of it. It’s part of a finished trilogy (so there’s three books for you to read). Book two was great too, though I think I still like this one more. I’m in the middle of Book Three now, and it’s taking all my strength to write this review instead of finishing it.

Heck, who am I kidding?

I’m off to finish it right now! Toodle-loo!

Summary(from goodreads):
Can there truly be love after death?
Drifting in the dark waters of a mysterious river, the only thing Amelia knows for sure is that she's dead. With no recollection of her past life—or her actual death—she's trapped alone in a nightmarish existence. All of this changes when she tries to rescue a boy, Joshua, from drowning in her river. As a ghost, she can do nothing but will him to live. Yet in an unforgettable moment of connection, she helps him survive.
Amelia and Joshua grow ever closer as they begin to uncover the strange circumstances of her death and the secrets of the dark river that held her captive for so long. But even while they struggle to keep their bond hidden from the living world, a frightening spirit named Eli is doing everything in his power to destroy their newfound happiness and drag Amelia back into the ghost world . . . forever.
Thrilling and evocative, with moments of pure pleasure, Hereafter is a sensation you won't want to miss.

I really loved Amelia’s story. I’ve been on a ghost kick as of late (check out our reviews of Deception by Lee Nichols and Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready), and her story was new and fresh and didn’t disappoint! It was a book of self-discovery with a generous helping of romance, and a dash of mystery. A great supernatural thriller!

It was great to get to discover her death alongside her, as she scavenged for the reasons why and how she actually died. Her description of the setting is haunting and beautiful, and I felt as if I could actually see the river where Amelia is stuck and the creepy bridge that overlooks it.

But perhaps my favorite part of this book is imagining what might happen next.  If you think long-distance relationships are heard, a relationship between a ghost and human ranks way above that on the difficulty scale. Somehow, due to the connection that was made when Amelia saved Josh, he can see her and she can touch him. But no one else can. The only way for them to be together is for Josh to withdraw from the rest of the world, and only spend time with her. I don’t think their relationship is something they can hide forever. Eventually Josh will have to make a choice. And it was knowing that that choice will eventually come that kept me hooked on this book. There were some slower moments where I lost interest, but my investment in these characters and their relationship was strong enough to keep me interested.

If you like ghost stories and impossible romances (like me)—then this story is for you! I personally can’t wait for Book 2!

We also got to meet Tara recently on the Dark Days stop in Austin, TX! She was super nice and she revealed one secret about Book 2! It’s not too spoiler-y, but very exciting nonetheless. In Hereafter, Amelia is stuck forever as she died (in a dress that is pretty, albeit not very covering). But in book two—she discovers a way to change her appearance, and she loses the drowning dress! Yay!

But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.

But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they’re set on convincing Vi to become one of them….starting by brainwashed Zenn. Vi can’t leave Zenn in the Thinkers’ hands, but she’s wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous: everything Zenn’s not. Vi can’t quite trust Jag and can’t quite resist him, but she also can’t give up on Zenn.

This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.

Have I mentioned how much I love Dystopian? Well let me say it again "I LOVE DYSTOPIAN!" There are so many amazing Dystopian books that have come out lately, and go ahead and add Possession to that list. Possession is a bit different from other Dystopians though. If you are an avid reader of supernatural YA and have not read any Dystopian, this would be a good first to sink your teeth into. It is a classic dystopian in the sense it has a setting in future sometime after the fall of modern day society, but surprise--some of the characters have supernatural abilities!!! I have yet to read a book that encompasses both, so I must give props to Miss Johnson for being the first!

We've already covered the awesomeness of supernatural characters placed in a dystopian society, but Possession has so much more. Let me list them for you:

1. Snarkie female heroine

2. Hot love triangle

3. Killer ending

Let's snark I mean start (excuse my grade school humor) with Violet, "Vi" for short. If you are a fan of Sophie from Hex Hall or Evie from Paranormalcy you will love Vi. She's a strong character with a razor sharp whit. Vi's been dealt a hard hand in life with the death of her sister, her father and the neglect of her mother, but those hardships have matured her into a worthy heroine. Instead of this pain turning her into a whiney, weak young woman, it's made her strong and unbreakable, which she needs to be able to face what hits her throughout the book.

Of course, we couldn't have a young adult book without a steamy love triangle! In one corner weighing with an amazing tan and jet black spiked hair, we have baddie Mr. Jag and in the other corner weighing in with ocean blue eyes and beautiful blonde locks we have the goodie Zenn! Plus, with names like those, how could any girl resist either one? Each of them also have their own little secrets (that I will not divulge; you'll have to go find them out yourself).

Oh my, what an ending! I am really big on book endings. You can basically have a horrible book, but if you give me a killer ending, then I will love you forever! And, ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you, this has a killer of an ending!!! The aspects of the dystopian world with the addition of the supernatural powers some of the characters have makes for one explosive ending! I sensed it coming, but not quite the way I expected, and I was still greatly moved by it! Ms. Johnson has left me craving more, and I'm so sad it will probably be a whole year before I am able to get more!

If I had to warn readers about anything in the story, I would say that at times it was a little confusing. So many books have these huge setups for their world where you are getting all your information right at the beginning. Possession does not have that. It jumps right into the action and explains the world as it goes along. With that, you have to read carefully or you'll miss something. I tend to skim books, reading for plot first then content later, and I found myself having to double back because I missed something important. On the other hand, all you readers out there that find world setups boring and slow, this book is for you! The first chapter throws you right into the action and just keeps going. However, if you like information overload on the world that you are entering, be patient with this book. You'll get it, but just gradually. After everything is said and done, regardless of the style that you prefer, read this book!!! It's an exciting read that will make you question what really is bad? Is everything that is not good automatically bad or can some things be both?

According to your nominations and votes, we compiled a list of the Top 25 Most Popular YA Heartthrobs. We’ve ranked them by seed according to the number of votes they received. In instances of a tie, we decided seed order by drawing characters randomly out of a hat (can you tell I’m a teacher?). There were no ties broken to decide what characters made the tournament, only to determine seed.

Now, before we can move on in the tournament, we need your help! We need advocates for each character, which is a person who is willing to take the time to write up why they think their character is the most Crush-Worthy of them all! Characters names that are in white below STILL NEED an advocate. Those in blue font are already taken. If you are interested in helping out, please email yasisterhood(at)gmail(dot)com with a list of characters you’d like to defend in order of preference.

Secondly, we also need people who are willing to be what I call pinch-hitters. That is—if someone who volunteered to be an advocate must drop out at the last minute, we need people willing to step in on short notice. If that is you, please please please let us know!

When we’ve filled all the advocate positions, we’ll start scheduling the matches! We’re looking to do 3-4 matches a week (Advocates, you’ll know in advance when yours is). Once the Match is posted first thing in the morning, you guys will have 24 hours to vote! Those votes will determine who moves on in the tournament!

And now… without further ado….

Sadie White's summer job isn't going to be on the beach life-guarding or working at rental booths like most kids her age. With her single mother's increasing pregnancy and refusal to work, Sadie has to take over her mother's job as a domestic servant for one of the wealthy summer families on a nearby island.

When the family arrives at their summer getaway, Sadie is surprised to learn that the owner of the house is Jax Stone, one of the hottest teen rockers in the world. If Sadie hadn't spent her life raising her mother and taking care of the house she might have been normal enough to be excited about working for a rock star.

Even though Sadie isn't impressed by Jax's fame, he is drawn to her. Everything about Sadie fascinates Jax but he fights his attraction. Relationship's never work in his world and as badly as he wants Sadie, he believes she deserves more. By the end of the summer, Jax discovers he can't breathe without Sadie.

But can their love overcome the disparity in their lifestyles? Or will they have to learn how to without each other breathe again?

Before I start this review, I must sing the praises of its author, Abbi Glines. She is an unbelievably awesome person who went above and beyond to make sure we got to read her book! I would have gladly taken the time to read any book (even if it was awful) if the author was a nice as Abbi.  BUT… as it so happens, this book was awesome! So it was a double win for us!

This is our first contemporary book here on YA Sisterhood, and I, for one, enjoyed the break from all things paranormal and supernatural. Normally, I throw a contemporary book in my reading list every once and while to break things up, though it usually ends up being something sad and heartbreaking a la The Book Thief or Revolution. I dove into this book looking for a fun summer escape read, but I found that and so much more!

This book is over 400 pages, and I devoured it all in one night (and well, early morning)! It was a fun read that took me back to high school, only throw in a cool rockstar. It makes for the perfect sizzling summer read.

HOWEVER…

It also has a lot of depth that I wasn’t expecting. Sadie has a rough home life with an irresponsible mother that makes Sadie take care of everything. And Sadie does it all—she cooks, cleans, makes the money, even takes care of her mother’s new born baby—without ever complaining. She’s got a strong soul, and it really makes you champion her story. You want her to have every happiness because she hasn’t had a whole lot up until now.

As a teacher, I have a couple students who are in similar situations—students who are infinitely more mature at 16 than I ever was. In real life, I offer these students what I can—advice, hope, friendship—but it gets disheartening when I can do little more than encourage these students to survive. Perhaps that’s why I had such a strong emotional connection with this book. Sadie is a survivor, and her actions and emotions were so realistic and true to life that I saw my students in her. And I wanted her to succeed, to do more than survive. I wanted her to live.

I loved this story! And I look forward to seeing what Abbi Glines writes next!

P.S. Guess what? The Nook and/or Kindle Editions of BREATHE are only $5.99!!!
